ATTENDANCE

Students are expected to attend school on a regular basis. Failure of a student to attend when he or she is able to do so will jeopardize the promotion of such student to the next grade. Parents should call the school in the morning to report a student's absence. Please send a written explanation with date of absences to your child's teacher on your child's first day back in school.
If an elementary student accrues 19 or more absences within a school year, that student may be retained due to excessive absences.

VISITORS

Parents are an important part of our school. In order for the school to keep a record of your visit and for the safety of all our students, Pine Island School asks that all visitors sign in immediately upon entering the school grounds.

LUNCHROOM BEHAVIOR

We expect students to observe proper decorum during breakfast and lunch. The students are expected to keep the noise at an appropriate level. Rules will be developed and explained to students concerning the consequences when the noise level is exceeded.

CLINIC

If your child becomes ill at school, we will contact you immediately. If we cannot reach you, we will use the emergency contact information you have provided. Please remember to keep all phone numbers current in the event we need to contact you.

MEDICINES

The Lee County School District has imposed strict guidelines for administering medicines at school. If a student is to be given a medicine on a daily basis, the parent must complete a PERMISSION FOR MEDICINE form and also have a DOCTOR'S PERMISSION FOR MEDICINE form completed by a physician. These forms can be obtained in the school office and will be kept on file. If there are any changes in medication, new forms must be completed before a new medicine or dosage is given.
In case of illness where a student will need to take medicine (prescription only) for a short time period, a written permission from the parent must accompany the medication. The written permission must contain the following: child's full name, date of the request, dosage, doctor's name, name of the medicine, and the termination date for administering.
The medication has to be sent in the prescription bottle to school and kept in the clinic. The school asks that medicines which are to be administered three(3) times daily, be given to the student at home.

DISCIPLINE

We believe all our students can behave appropriately in school. We will tolerate no student stopping a teacher from teaching and/or any student from learning. In order to provide your child, and all the students in our school, the excellent learning climate they deserve, we are utilizing the following discipline plan.
At the beginning of school the teacher and students within each classroom will establish a list of class rules. They also will determine what consequences or punishment will result if a student chooses to break a rule. A copy of each teacher's discipline plan will be sent home for each parent to have. The parent will be asked to sign the bottom part of the plan and return the tear-off portion to school with the student.
Although the teacher is in charge of discipline in the classroom, there will be occasions when a student will need to be sent to the principal. Listed below are some forms of unaccepted behavior that may result in the student being sent to the office.

   1. Disrespect to any member of the faculty or staff
   2. Use of profanity
   3. Abuse of school property
   4. Disruptive behavior
   5. Bringing knives and/or other weapons
   6. Leaving school grounds or classroom without permission
   7. Truancy
   8. Possession of drugs or controlled substances
   9. Fighting or threatening
  10. Stealing

It is necessary that children learn to develop self-discipline in order to further their learning. We ask that you discuss with your child the importance of and the need for good behavior and a good attitude while at school.

CARE OF TEXTBOOKS, LIBRARY BOOKS, ETC.

The school staff urges all parents to encourage their child to take good care of his books and any materials he might use that have been furnished by the school.
Children should not leave books where small brothers or sisters could possibly tear or mark on them. During rainy weather, some type of cover would be helpful in keeping books dry.
Students are responsible for all textbooks and library books issued to them during the school year. All lost or damaged books must be paid for. All moneys are recorded by the school bookkeeper and paid to the proper fund for replacement purposes. If a lost book is found, moneys paid will be refunded.

BUS CONDUCT

Specific student behavior expectations are established for the safe and efficient operation of the school district transportation system in accordance with state laws and regulations. Transportation is considered an extension of the regular school program and students who violate behavior expectations while riding a bus are subject to suspension from riding the bus and/or all other penalties established for misbehavior while students are on the school premises. Annually, copies of these regulations are provided to all students. Any questions or concerns pertaining to the district transportation system should be directed to Lee County Schools' Transportation North (772-2349).
Students who are going to another student's home must bring a written permission from the parent/guardian and approved by an authorized school administrator. For the safety of the child, the school and your child's teacher need a written notification of any change in the manner in which your child gets home.
Riding other buses for the purpose of going home with a friend, going to non-school meetings and clubs, private lessons, and other personal conveniences will not be approved. For insurance purposes, every student on a bus, other than their assigned bus, must have proper written permission.
